Welcome to the Author Smarter Boot Camp! I'm your drill sergeant, Michelle Fox.
This boot camp will help you establish a strong infrastructure that can support and sustain your career as an author. You only realize in hindsight, after things have gone wrong, how important it is to set things up correctly. This boot camp will give your career a kick start, and when success comes, you'll be ready.
Why do I get to be the drill sergeant? I've had break out books, hit bestseller lists, and had a full-time income through a lot of ups and downs for almost a decade. But the truly important part is...I procrastinate and avoid writing by learning about marketing (hence why I'm really here lol and why there's some cutting edge stuff in this boot camp. I'm ahead of the curve on a few things.).
I ran one of the first, if not the first freebie promos on a site called Instafreebie (now Prolific Works) and drove so much traffic, the promo crashed their servers. (This technique is now what people do on Bookfunnel by the way. I didn't invent it, but I was an early pioneer in showing its potential.)
I've organized effective, low-cost guerilla marketing cross promos since 2013, helped authors hit lists, have their first four figure month, and make four, five, and six figures running ads. I've also ran my own boxed set that hit the USA Today list without any gimmick marketing.
I've watched authors make millions and then lose it all, and watched other authors make millions that turned into tens of millions. I'm a dinosaur (just call me authorsaurus) in this industry. I've seen some things, done even more things, and I know where aaaaaaall the bodies are buried mwahahahaha.
Probably most important for up and coming authors, I'm the queen of low ad spends. I'm all about making small big, and I'm going to talk in depth about paid ad strategies for small budgets, exclusively in this StoryBundle project.
I've also done many things wrong and had my share of failure too. You'll get the benefit of all my flubs and all my 20/20 hindsight. I've climbed to the top of Mt. Reader, fallen back to the bottom, and climbed back up again. I know the best handholds on the climb.
The main thing is I'm all about stability. I don't want to crash and burn in my career. Early on I realized how unstable the publishing industry was, and I saw how the first scammers were infiltrating and subverting publishing's systems. As a result, I consciously worked to create sustainability for the long term.
I didn't want to pivot endlessly to manage all the changes retailers made or all the damage scammers caused, so I focused my hustle on sidestepping the worst of the pain points in publishing.
This is the experience I'm sharing with you in this boot camp. How to find success and what to do with it while sidestepping as many pitfalls as possible.
