Love's Leap:

"Because people usually come here for two reasons," said the woman. "To get married or to get over heartache. Sometimes, it's both. Come, celebrate Leap Day with us and give it a go. It's only one day, right?"

I had no idea how anyone celebrated Leap Day, especially with really old books and newspapers, but I was lonely and filled with heartache.

Why not celebrate instead of mourn?

I nodded at her finally. "Okay, I've never celebrated Leap Day before, so I'll join you. Like you said. It's just one day, right?"

She laughed, a nervous sound, as the sheriff handed me some blue glow sticks.

Abide:

"Do you have a copy of the book?" Stori asked again in a quiet voice.

The woman lowered her voice. "Just got one in, but are you sure you want it?"

"Why wouldn't I want it," Stori said, frowning.

"People say it's bad luck," said the woman. "Things happen to people that buy it, apparently."

Stori leaned toward the woman. Fine. She'd play along.

"Things? Like what?"

The employee looked away, glancing around the area for a moment, and then leaned closer, her voice falling to a sharp whisper again.

"Magic things."

The Space Between Us:

"Still going back," Skye insisted, crossing her arms against her black coat. "Don't you understand? I have to save him." The words came out small and tight.

She glanced at her wristwatch. Almost midnight.

Thea was awash in the full moon's frosty glow and gleam of Christmas lights that draped across the patio between the black cast iron lamp posts.

Waiting for midnight and the first burst of winter solstice magic.

Like a hurricane, it would propel Skye back to 1912. And return her like an avalanche at midnight on Christmas Day.

"But the magic may be too strong this time!" Thea grabbed her hands and held them tightly. "Not allowing you to change anything, Skye. There's too much that can go wrong this time with a whole town at stake."
