THE 2024 CATTITUDE BUNDLE

The 2024 Cattitude Bundle - Curated by Kristine Kathryn Rusch

All except two of the dozens of cats I've lived with in my very long life have been rescue cats. That phrase means that I rescued them, and maybe that's true in the legal sense. Most of the cats came into my household because I opened my door to them.

I found a large number of them at animal shelters. The bulk, though, came during the years that my husband and I lived on the Oregon Coast. Apparently, evil people decided that our small town was a great place to dump cats.

Those cats eventually found their way to our house on the hill. We ended up with purebred Birmans and cats of uncertain parentage. We ended up with housecats who had very little hope of surviving in the wild, and feral kittens we had to pull from under the foundation of our house. We gave away a lot of cats over the years to friends. When we moved, we made our neighbors promise to take care of the feral outdoor cat (whom we had fixed but who had no desire to go inside ever, not ever, what were we thinking?) as well as any strays that made it up the hill.

As animal lovers, our neighbors agreed. They also built a little open-ended shelter for the feral outdoor cat, and managed to chase away the raccoons.

Now that my husband and I live in Las Vegas, we visit the animal shelters. Mostly we give them food that our fussy, rich, former stray cats think is beneath them. Occasionally, though, we fall in love.

Animal shelters do the heavy lifting for the rest of us. Which is why our charity this year is The Best Friends Animal Society, whose goal is to find every stray animal a home. They're working to make each animal shelter in the country a no-kill shelter. Find out more here.

I'm telling you all this because I have a hunch that everyone who clicked on the Cattitude Storybundle has a soft spot in their warm hearts for cats—and not just cats in the fictional abstract, but cats in real life too.

Now that I've dealt with real life, let's talk about that fictional abstract…which I'm not really sure is an abstract. For example, in this bundle, you'll find a lot of stories and novels that combine cats and magic.

I always feel odd putting the words "cats" and "magic" in the same sentence, because I feel like that's redundant. Cats are magic. As a friend of mine said years ago, if you move into a house and there's a stray cat in the yard, that's because the cat knew you were coming and was waiting for you.

Yep. Just like I believe that some cat scrawled a sign in the universal feline language that told other cats that there was a safe space at the top of our Oregon Coast hill.

I will budge on part of this, though. Feline magic has a lot of nuances. You'll find them in the bundle. Ghost cats, cats that live in magical bookshops, cats that talk to their people…wait! Don't all cats talk to their people? The bundle includes witches and shapeshifters (of the feline variety) and guardians in cat form. (Or maybe that's cats in guardian form.)

There are cat short stories and cat novels. There's humor as well as some very serious books. There's murder most foul (not fowl—that's not murder in feline-land) and romance most heartwarming.

The contributors include New York Times bestsellers, well-known romance writers, well-known mystery writers, award-winning writers, and some classic authors as well.

In other words, there's something here for everyone. On top of that, there are four exclusive books in the bundle, books you can't get anywhere else.

So, as you buy enough feline reading to keep you (and your cat) happy through the end of the year, remember to throw in a few dollars to support shelter cats. Yes, they need love, but they also need food and cat litter and medical care—all of which costs money.

This bundle can help them just a little. And it'll help you too, by giving you hours of enjoyment.
