The SFWA Fantasy Bundle - Curated by Cat Rambo

This second bundle of the year draws from SFWA's fantasy authors, showing a full spectrum of possibilities including magic iPhones, steampunk heroes, mysterious apartments, self-resurrecting secret agents, ancient magic, and epic battles. I'm always amazed at the wealth of talent displayed by my fellow SFWA members. In its fifty-plus years, the organization has grown to encompass many of the best talents working in the fantasy field today. Reading through the submissions was a great pleasure, but also involved the torment of choosing.

A few of my favorites are:

  1. Stay Crazy by Erica Satifka presents a heroine who doesn't have it all together, to the point where she doesn't know whether the voice talking to her from a box of frozen chicken is a hallucination or reality. Somewhere in the aisles of Savertown, USA, though, evil lurks.
  2. Black Angel by Kyell Gold shows how emotionally satisfying furry fiction can be as well as how accurately it can reflect today's landscape. The final volume of a trilogy about friendship, it can easily be read alone — though it will probably lead you to pick up Green Fairy and Red Devil as well.
  3. Cracked: A Magic iPhone Story by Janine A. Southard is a funny, fresh, and fast-moving look at modern life in Seattle, and what happens when your phone becomes a little too central to your life.

In choosing, I tried to present a wide range of possibilities from the several dozen titles that were presented. Next year, SFWA's Self-Publishing Committee will take over running the program, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they assemble — though I may offer to help with the winnowing. I don't want to miss out on all that great reading.

Some of the proceeds of the bundle go to support SFWA in its mission to support, promote, inform, defend, and advocate for professional fantasy and science fiction writers.
